Goa Police boasts 96.67 per cent detection rate in heinous crime cases in 2024

Goa Police achieved a 96.67 per cent detection rate in heinous cases reported in 2024, details shared by the department reveal.

The performance report for the calendar year indicated that 29 cases of murder and a similar number of attempted murders were detected alongside 100 out of 106 rape cases. Similarly, all registered cases of dacoity and robbery were solved. In all, 174 out of 180 heinous cases were detected this year.

The department’s detection rate for total Indian Penal Code cases was recorded at 87.98 per cent with 2,096 registered cases solved as of December 29, 2024. Besides, 250 cases led to convictions by October 2024.

For cybercrime offences, Goa registered 56 cases in 2024, of which 18 “worked out”, marking a detection rate of 35 per cent and arrests of 45 persons.

Goa increased the percentage of lien amount in financial fraud from 6 per cent to 9.8 per cent and reduced the average defrauded amount from Rs 9 crore per month in 2023 to Rs 6 crore in 2024.

The police further stated that Goa’s efforts were acknowledged pan-India, with the State ranking fifth in the country for lien percentage in financial frauds by October 2024.

On road safety and traffic management, the traffic police recorded a 5.47 per cent reduction in road accidents in 2024. As per official records, 2,660 accidents were registered compared to 2,814 during the same period in 2023.

The department also issued 3,03,478 challans to violating motor vehicle owners/ riders/ drivers, collecting fines amounting to Rs 20.53 crore. The traffic police further sent recommendations to the Transport Department for suspending licences of 32,536 violators, caught for various traffic offences.

A significant milestone was the inauguration of the Traffic Response and Congestion Control system on August 27, 2024 which monitored and managed traffic congestion. The system attended to 1,969 calls regarding traffic issues and the officials initiated action based on 364 social media posts.

Under the TRUST (Traffic Rules Understanding and Safety Training) initiative, 3,398 violators underwent sensitisation and training sessions while 46,765 students and 40,484 drivers participated in road safety lectures. Public outreach programmes in collaboration with village panchayats and local bodies further enhanced road safety awareness.

The traffic police are also leveraging technology to enhance convenience and efficiency. In collaboration with BITS Goa, the department is developing mobile applications to help tourists locate parking spaces and prevent multiple checks of the same vehicle on the same day.
