Close to a year after launching mobile traffic patrolling, Goa Police is ramping up enforcement with 50 additional two-wheelers to intensify surveillance, especially in the high-traffic and narrow lanes of the coastal belt.

Police officials revealed to The Goan that patrolling will extend beyond midnight on weekends and peak days. “On normal days, patrolling will be conducted till 10 pm and extend till midnight or beyond during weekends and other rush days. Coastal areas and other busy streets will be covered under the scheme,” the official said.

In the current circumstances, the department added, officials are on two-shift duty till late hours.

The initiative was first introduced in April last year in a bid to cover larger areas and enforce road discipline.

“The added fleet will boost traffic regulation and enforcement. We will cover more areas than before,” said the source, further adding that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant will flag off the bikes.

This bolstered drive will also minimise road barricades, as violations are being tackled on the move. Cops on two-wheelers are issuing maximum challans without disrupting traffic flow. Barricades will only be put up in cases of drunk driving or with prior approval. “Anyone found violating traffic rules and caught by the policemen on the two-wheelers patrolling duty, will be penalised without disrupting the traffic flow. We have booked several cases since the launch,” he added.

In 2024, the department recorded 4,10,125 traffic violations, collecting Rs 24.74 crore in fines.
