The Goa Sikh Youth (GSY) Association organised a ‘Guru ka Langar’ on the fourth day of the Novena of St Francis Xavier at Old Goa, in a bid to foster and highlight the importance of service to humanity.
The Langar was organised at the Bhakia property with members of the association serving free food to the devotees, pilgrims and others.
Speaking to The Goan, GSY president Sandeep Sartaj informed that since the past two years, the association was thinking of organising a Langar at the Novena and Feast of St Francis Xavier, one of the biggest feasts in the State.
“And this year, we were able to accomplish the objective and this is the first time ever that a Langar has been organised on occasion of a Christian feast,” he stated.
“Through the Langar we want to highlight the importance of service to humanity without discrimination on the basis of caste, creed or religion,” Sartaj stated and added that the Langar will again be organised on the Feast day i.e. on December 3.
Goa Sikh Youth member Siddharth Mehta said that the initiative was taken keeping in mind the cultural vibrancy, the unity and the brotherhood prevailing in Goa.
“The basic essence of ‘Gura Ka Langar’ is to serve the people,” Mehta informed.
A local Mariano Ferrao expressed gratitude to the Goa Sikh Youth for organising the Langar at the Novena of St Francis Xavier and urged the people to come and get served.
Santa Cruz local Arturo D’Souza said that the Sikh community did a great job during the Covid times by setting up Langars at the GMC and other areas to help the people in times of distress.
“I was associated with them during Covid and today, they called me to assist them in getting people for the Langar,” D’Souza stated.
Chimbel local Ana Gracias, who has been working with Goa Sikh Youth since Covid times, said that it’s a very good initiative, which is setting up an example for all religions to live in peace and harmony.
