Goa to have 'Urban Forestry' to fight climate change

PANAJI: In a bid to build climate resilience and cool down rising urban temperatures, the Goa govt will roll out a state-wide Urban Forestry initiative across all municipal areas.

This initiative will be closely monitored by both the Forest and Urban Development departments, with the Forest dept taking lead in identifying appropriate locations for the project's pilot phase.

The move was formalised during a high-level meeting chaired by Forest Minister Vishwajit Rane, attended by officials from both departments, municipal chairpersons, councillors, and stakeholders. The session featured presentations on sustainable urban planning and climate resilience strategies.

Taking to X, Rane said, “This initiative stems from our vision to tackle rising temperatures through sustainable, nature-based solutions." He further added that the core of this mission is to develop ‘green lungs’ within urban landscapes to enhance air quality, support biodiversity, and provide shaded, healthier environments for residents.

“All municipal chairpersons and councillors have pledged their support to this cause,” Rane confirmed. “We will work together to identify and transform spaces into urban forests, utilising local resources such as wet waste, rainwater harvesting, and native plant species.”

On plans for specific areas, Rane stated, “We will transform the Sonsodo waste dump using the Miyawaki technique, which allows for the rapid growth of dense forests. Vertical gardens will also be introduced in selected urban zones to further enhance the greenery. StudioPOD will assist in designing these spaces to ensure a cohesive and functional urban landscape."
