Goa to replace its existing power meters with Smart meters

PANAJI: Goa is all set to replace its existing electric power meters with smart meters for 7.5 lakh consumers from the coming fiscal- 2025-26 onwards. In the first phase, the project will be implemented only for commercial establishments.

The State cabinet today pproved the appointment of Digismart Networks Pvt Ltd as the service provider for the installation of smart power meters across the state. 

“In the first phase, only commercial establishments will be taken up for meter replacement. The project will involve replacing a total of 7.5 lakh meters across three phases. Individual household installations will be addressed in later stages,” Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said after Cabinet meeting. 

Union Ministry for Power has sanctioned Rs 467 crore for smart metering project for Goa.

Under the Revamped Distribution Scheme (RDS), Goa’s initial target date for implementation of smart electricity meters was March 2023, which was later extended to March 2024.   

The smart meters function on a real-time basis and record and store all electrical parameters such as consumption of energy, voltage and current levels, etc. The data will be used by the department for billing, to monitor power quality, load scheduling, demand management and fault analysis
