The Goa State Innovation Council, under the aegis of the Department of Science, Technology & Waste Management, has launched the Goa Young Innovator's Award (GYIA) 2024-25, an initiative aimed at fostering innovation and creativity among school students.

The brochure for the award programme was unveiled at Don Bosco College of Engineering, Fatorda, at the hands of Jose Manuel Noronha, Chairman of the Goa State Innovation Council, and Ankit Yadav, IAS, Director of the Department of Science, Technology & Waste Management.

Addressing the media, Noronha said the competition provides a platform for young students to present innovative ideas and solutions addressing real-world challenges. “The initiative encourages students to think critically, identify problems, and develop practical solutions, with teachers playing a key role in guiding them through the process,” he said.

The competition is open to students in two categories: Category 1: Classes VIII to IX; Category 2: Classes V to VII.

Noronha said prizes and mentorship opportunities await the students. To recognise and reward innovation, he said cash prizes will be awarded in each category: 1st prize: Rs 20,000, 2nd prize: Rs 10,000, and 3rd prize: Rs 5,000. Additionally, winners will receive mentorship and access to innovation facilities to refine their ideas.

On the evaluation criteria, Noronha said projects will be assessed based on the originality of the idea, usability, and practical applicability.

He said the initiative is aimed at encouraging maximum participation, noting that schools, teachers, and parents are encouraged to support students in participating in this initiative, which aims to nurture the next generation of innovators. Additionally, students from nearby schools will be invited to visit the exhibition to inspire them to develop their ideas for future competitions.

Students can submit their applications online at www.goastateinnovationcouncil.com/initiatives/GYIA.
The last date for online submissions is February 28, and the winners will be announced in March.
