The recent Golden Globe Awards saw a lot of amazing movies winning big. Here's a look at the books behind these award winning pieces

Fences

Hidden Fences gaffe aside, the film secured two nominations for the Golden Globes. Denzel Washington was nominated for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama while Viola Davis was nominated and won the Best Supporting Actress in a motion picture. The movie which was directed by Denzel Washington himself is based on the 1983 book Fences by August Wilson which is part of his ten-part Pittsburgh Cycle plays. The book has won several awards like the 1987 Tony Award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize.

Lion

The movie which is a debut directorial by Garth Davis and stars Dev Patel, Rooney Mara and Nicole Kidman was nominated for Best Motion picture, drama; Best supporting actor in a motion picture; Best supporting actress in a motion picture and original score, motion picture. Although it didn't manage to win any awards at the Golden Globes, young Keshav Jadav, a slum boy from India who played a key role in the film was certainly the star of the night. The movie is based on the 2014 book A Long Way Home by Saroo Brierley, an Indian born Australian businessman who recounts his personal experience of being separated from his birth mum and is instead adopted by an Australian couple. 25 years later using Google Earth he is reunited with his brith mum.

Arrival

The moment this film was released there was a lot of appreciation for Amy Adams performance in the film with critics everywhere stating that her role was definitely award worthy. She didn't however manage to win any awards at the Golden Globes although she was nominated for Best actress in a motion picture, drama for Arrival. The film was based on the one of the tales from the book Stories of your Life and Others by Ted Chiang and focuses on the presence of alien lifeforms on Planet Earth. The book was winner of the 2000 Nebula Award for Best Novella as well as the 1999 Sturgeon award.

Hidden Figures

The success of this film is already seeming ratings for the book shoot up. The film which saw

Octavia Spencer secure a nomination for best supporting actress in a motion picture is based on the non fiction book Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race by Margot Lee Shetterly and tells the true story of NASA’s African-American female mathematicians who played a crucial role in America’s space program—and whose contributions have been unheralded, until now.

Nocturnal Animals

The film saw Aaron Taylor-Johnson win his first Golden Globe for best supporting actor in a motion picture while Tom Ford was nominated for best director, motion picture and best screenplay, motion picture.The film is based on the 1993 book Tony and Susan by Austin Wright and focuses on a woman called Susan Morrow is spooked by the manuscript of her ex-husband’s first book, Nocturnal Animals. When the book first came out it wasn't much of a hit. However after it was republished in 2010, the book caught the eye of Ford who decided to adapt it into a movie
