The State government on Friday cracked down on eleven nightspots purportedly said to be operating as 'dance bars' in North Goa's tourism hotspot Calangute, days after it faced adverse remarks and was issued directions by the Bombay High Court at Goa.
Bardez Deputy Collector issued an order consequent to which the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) sealed the eleven outlets, including the controversial 'Maifal' in Calangute.
The Deputy Collector, along with the team of the GSPCB and a posse of policemen conducted a joint operation and inspected these alleged 'dance bars' following which eleven of them were shut.
The eleven establishments sealed are: Posh Nosh, Devil's, Cooda C/o. Mufasa, Mehfil, Three Kings, Next Level c/o Jupiter, Norms Pub/Club No Escape, Black Heart/Break Down, 39 Steps, Tropical Lounge and Plantain Leaf.
Earlier this week the Bombay High Court at Goa while hearing a public interest litigation over several outlets with 'bar and restaurant' licences operating in several localities of Calangute, had directed the GSPCB to 'immediately conduct an inspection and shut the unlicensed outlets.
The PIL was filed by Calangute residents Sudesh Mayekar and Kundan Kerkar in which 13 bars were named defendants besides several government officials including the Tourism director, North Goa Collector and Superintendent of Police, Calangute Police Inspector, Calangute Panchayat, Excise Department, GSPCB, Director of Panchayats, Bardez BDO, TCP department and the FDA.
