MARGAO
The Grand Club of Assolna, one of the oldest Goan residential clubs in Cavel-Mumbai, popularly known as Kud, celebrated its centenary with a grand function at Assolna.
The 100 years of the Club’s existence were marked by the release of a souvenir by Velim MLA Cruz Silva and Assolna parish priest Fr Romeou Godinho, in the presence of club president Dr Levinson Martins, the executive committee, and renowned actor-director-singer couple Wilson and Sharon Mazarello, along with CCE Director and Ex-Superintendent of Police Sammy Tavares, whose hit Konkani drama Grandma was staged on the occasion.
Sammy Tavares, who has taken Goan tiatr to new heights by staging Konkani tiatr in countries such as Canada, Paris, and the USA, was honoured with an award of appreciation.
Wilson and Sharon Mazarello, who hail from Gorkomorod Velim, were awarded the Grand Club of Assolna Lifetime Achievement Award in entertainment for their contributions to Goan tiatr and Konkani songs. Velim MLA Cruz urged Goans to protect the institutions of Goan clubs in Mumbai, which he described as part of Goan heritage. “Goans will need these clubs for future generations, especially in times when a place to stay is required,” the MLA added.
Fr Godinho congratulated the Grand Club of Assolna for preserving the club for 100 years and wished it continued success in the years to come.
In his welcome address, Club President Dr Levinson Martins mentioned that, in times of need, the Grand Club of Assolna is open to those requiring temporary accommodation as guests.
The souvenir includes articles written by various writers depicting Goan life in such clubs.
These clubs have been a home away from home for Goans, especially seafarers.
Among those present were Assolna Sarpanch Ivan Fernandes, Panch Revlin Ferreira, Treasurer Peter Furtado, Secretary Paul Silva Lobo, and Executive Member Denzil Noronha.
