MARGAO
With several commercial establishments in Margao sealed for conducting business without the mandatory consent to operate, the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has organised a special camp to assist business owners with online applications for consent to operate and renewal under the Water and Air Act.
Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira announced that the camp will be held on January 24 at the South District Collectorate building in Margao from 2.30 pm to 6 pm. This initiative is aimed at helping business owners in Margao and surrounding areas who have been operating without the mandatory GSPCB consent to apply and obtain the necessary authorisation.
Sequeira encouraged all business owners to bring the required documents to ensure a smooth application process. He stressed that the camp is part of an effort to assist establishments that have been operating without the consent to operate their businesses.
The High Court had earlier issued directives in a Public Interest Litigation filed by Navelim resident Prof Antonio Alvares concerning contamination of Salpem Lake. The court ordered the GSPCB to seal 46 business establishments in Margao for not having the required consent to operate.
Last week, during a drive, the GSPCB sealed 21 establishments and gave the remaining businesses the chance to apply for consent. Sources, however, revealed that the 46 sealed establishments are just a small fraction, with many other businesses in Margao continuing to operate without the necessary approvals.
