GUJ condemns police assault on The Goan photojournalist

The Goa Union of Journalists (GUJ) has strongly condemned police assault on photojournalist during a protest in Margao on Saturday late evening.

The Goa photojournalist Santosh Mirajkar was assaulted by the police while performing his duty on field.

The incident occurred when police were trying to disperse the protesters near the Colva road junction. After most protesters had left, police used lathicharge to clear the area.

Mirajkar had questioned police after they appealed media to delete the video footage of lathicharge.

In response, police officers struck him with lathis, even after he identified himself as a journalist.

“This is a direct attack on the freedom of the press. The actions of the police are highly condemnable,” stated GUJ president Rajtilak Naik.

The GUJ is calling for the immediate suspension of the involved police officers and demands a thorough investigation into the incident
