PANAJI: Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai expressed concern over some Indian leaders criticizing the nation abroad, calling such actions unprecedented and unfortunate. Speaking during the 76th Republic Day event today, he emphasized that while the Indian Constitution once faced boycotts and criticism from some political groups, it has since become a cornerstone of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity, widely accepted and respected.
"While our Constitution faced initial boycotts and criticism, today it is widely accepted and respected. The right to differ is the foundation of democracy, but it is unfortunate when leaders or citizens criticize our democratic setup on foreign soil. Such actions are unprecedented, yet we have faced these challenges with resolve," the Governor stated.
Looking to the future, Pillai emphasized India’s ambition to become an economic powerhouse. He highlighted the country’s current position as the fifth-largest economy in the world and predicted that India would rise to third place within a few years. By 2047, he said, the nation aims to become the world’s leading or second-largest economy.
"We are the fastest-growing economy in the world. While officially ranked fifth, some evaluations place us fourth. With confidence, our Prime Minister predicts we will rise to third in 2-3 years and aim to be the first or second-largest economy by 2047," said Governor Pillai.
The Governor also celebrated India as the mother of democracy, highlighting its political stability compared to challenges faced by neighbours like China, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. “Our Bharat has preserved its democratic values and constitutional integrity, becoming a model for the world,” he said.
Advocating for ‘One Nation, One Election’ and One Nation, One Law,’ he praised Goa’s successful implementation of a Uniform Civil Code, encouraging other states to follow.
The Governor lauded Goa’s development under CM Pramod Sawant, highlighting its top-ranking per capita income, advanced infrastructure, and peaceful environment. “Goa sets an example for the rest of India,” he said.
He also emphasized the importance of respecting differing opinions, calling it the foundation of democracy.
Meanwhile, Sawant also extended his wishes to Goans on Republic Day stating that the young generation should know the importance of the Indian Constitution and called for the people to uphold the principles of the Constitution and contribute to the vision of building a Viksit Bharat.
The Republic Day parade saw the flag's unfurling, followed by a march past by various schools from across Goa.
