Goa Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai has encouraged students to learn about the life and contributions of freedom fighter Libia Lobo Sardesai, who is set to receive the Padma Shri for her role in Goa’s Liberation.

The Governor stressed the importance of studying the life of the 100-year-old freedom fighter and her significant involvement in the Goa Liberation movement.

“The Goan freedom struggle, her contributions, her sacrifices, and her work with the radio are all important lessons for our younger generation. Brave women like Libia, who fought for the nation, were few both in Goa and across India. She was at the forefront of this struggle,” he said.

Pillai made these remarks after presenting a felicitation to Lobo Sardesai at her home in Panaji, where she was honoured with the Padma Shri. This award recognises her pivotal role in Goa’s freedom struggle, including her work with an underground radio station in the forests during the liberation movement.

The Governor also expressed pride in her recognition by the Central Government. “The proposal to honour her was accepted, and the Padma Shri award bestowed upon her is a fitting tribute to her dedication. On behalf of Goa and the Central Government, I congratulate her and pray for her continued health and strength,” he added.

Lobo Sardesai, touched by the honour, attributed her achievements to divine grace.

“I thank God for this blessing in my lifetime, even at this stage. Without God’s grace, none of this would have been possible. I don’t believe I did anything extraordinary; I simply did what came my way. I am deeply honoured by the Governor’s visit. Though people say I’ve done many things, I feel like a simple person who accepts whatever comes my way. This honour is truly a blessing,” she said.
