Groupe International Chirurgiens Amis de la Main (GICAM), a Swiss foundation, on Monday commenced its second Hand Surgery and Rehabilitation Camp at Goa Medical College (GMC) Hospital, which is expected to benefit around 50 patients.
Health Minister Viswhajit Rane took to social media to announce the commencement of the second season of the Hand Surgery and Hand Rehabilitation Programme (GICAM), stating that the initiative marks another significant milestone in advancing specialised healthcare in Goa.
The camp, following GICAM’s visit in July and August last year, provides hands-on experience to GMC doctors in advanced hand surgery, rehabilitation, and prosthetic care. Rane said that the opportunities are pivotal in enhancing the skills of GMC’s medical professionals and establishing Goa as a hub for world-class medical expertise.
Later, addressing media persons, GMC Dean Dr Shivanand Bandekar said that on the first day, four complex surgeries were successfully performed and a total of 50 surgeries would be performed during the camp.
“These are intricate procedures requiring high levels of expertise,” he said, adding that out of 100 surgeries performed by GMC, nearly 10 per cent are difficult and need expertise.
In August last year, the state health department signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Swiss foundation based in Lugano to set up a hand surgery unit and a centre of excellence in hand care in the Super Speciality Block of GMC.
