St Andre MLA Viresh Borkar has sought heritage status for the 10th century Curca spring, which is currently lying in a dilapidated state.

Borkar further made a demand that a tourism circuit be implemented in St Andre constituency which is rich in heritage sites.

The MLA made the demands after inspecting the Curca spring at the request of the locals.

Speaking to The Goan after the inspection, Borkar said the Curca spring is a historic one which is awaiting revelation to the outside world.

“There are historic ruins here and to protect the spring as well as the ruins, there is a need to declare the spot into a heritage site so that the same is preserved for posterity,” Borkar added.

The MLA said like the Curca spring, there are many historic sites in St Andre constituency like the underground palace of Raja Soundekar, St Anna’s church and others.

“If the heritage and natural sites in St Andre are taken into consideration, a tourism circuit could be planned in the constituency as foreign tourists are attracted towards such historic sites,” Borkar informed and stated that it would also help generate employment and improve economy among the locals.

“I will write to departments concerned like tourism, archives and archaeology, and others with a detailed plan so that historic sites are declared as protected and a tourism circuit is implemented,” Borkar added.

On the Curca spring, a local Manguesh Kuttikar informed that in the past, he had written to various governments to preserve the spring as well as the ruins around it.

“Now, with the current MLA showing interest, I am hopeful that the spot would be declared as heritage site so that it is preserved for future generations,” Kuttikar said.

He claimed that the structures were built by the Israelis in the 10th century, and they used to do trading here.
