Digambar to ask MMC for central place for them

An attempt by the Margao police to evict Goan vendors from the hinterland talukas of Quepem and Sanguem from the roadside opposite the police station saw the beleaguered vendors knocking the door of Margao MLA Digambar Kamat on Saturday.
The Margao MLA later visited the Margao police headquarters and was closeted with Margao Sub-Divisional Police Officer, DySP Sidhant Shirodkar to resolve the issue.
The vendors, who have been selling locally produced vegetables and fruits over the last decade and half, were told by the police to move out from the footpath opposite the police station.
The vendors approached the Margao MLA for his intervention, contending that they have no other place to sell their locally-produced fruits and vegetables other than on the roadside drain.
Sympathising with the vendors, the Margao MLA said the vendors have been eking a living on the activity over the years. That’s not all.
He said what is important to note is that these vendors have been growing vegetables and fruits in villages such as Morpilla and bringing the produce for sale in the commercial capital to get a better rate. “If they do not get a rate for the produce, they may give up agriculture altogether,” he said.
Kamat said he would also ask the Margao Municipality to look out for a centrally located space for the vendors from the hinterland talukas to sell their fruit and vegetable produce.
Meanwhile, the police have clarified that they did not sought the eviction of the vendors per se, but had only requested them not to sit at the turn to avoid track bottlenecks.
