Illegal encroachments razed in 'Lala Ki Basti' in Goa

PANAJI: Following the High Court order, a major demolition drive commenced today in Lala Ki Basti, Auchit-Waddo, Madel-Thivim, where almost 25 illegal structures erected on Comunidad land are being razed.

The operation, targeting unauthorized houses and encroachments, was initiated by the concerned authorities with a heavy police presence to maintain law and order.

The long-delayed action began at 9.30 am after a renewed push from the judiciary to clamp down on encroachments and illegal structures in North Goa.

Tivim Comunidade Attorney Savio Pereira said that it's been a long battle of 15 years, but it’s good that this is happening now.

“All illegal structures on Communidade land are going to be demolished, not just the Tivim constituency, but all over Goa, and we have taken cognisance of this issue very seriously," he said.

The demolition drive was initially planned for early March but was postponed, out of consideration for a religious festival observed by the minority community residing in the affected settlement.

However, with the recent directive from the High Court of Bombay at Goa, issued in the wake of a suo moto Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against illegal constructions, the authorities have initiated the action.
