IMA Goa condemns attack on the doctor, demands for stricter action

Panaji: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) Goa State has strongly condemned the recent attack on a doctor at Goa Medical College's emergency wing. 


The incident occurred on Sunday late at night when a doctor on duty was violently assaulted. The accused Arif Siddique from Kerala, has been arrested and is currently in judicial custody for 14 days. 


In an official statement, Dr Sandesh Chodankar, President of IMA Goa State, urged authorities to take strict action against the perpetrator under the Goa Medicare Service Personnel Act. He prioritised the need for punishment as per the law, stating, "The law must be enforced to protect healthcare workers. It is time to set a precedent to prevent such incidents in the future."


Dr Chodankar also said that the recurring issue of doctors being soft targets for public anger. “We are often blamed for things beyond our control, and it is due to a lack of understanding on the part of patients. This needs to stop,” he said.
