Inmate attacked in Colvale Jail

An undertrial sustained injuries to his eye and hand after he was allegedly assaulted with a pen by a fellow inmate in the Central Jail at Colvale on Monday night.

According to sources, the incident took place in the jail late Monday night, when Aziz Aslam Asif, a history sheeter from Tumakuru-Karnataka was asleep.

Taking note of the incident, the prison administration shifted the accused, identified as Deepak, to another ward. Aziz was admitted to the Mapusa District Hospital and after treatment, was sent back to the jail.

The jail administration had not filed a complaint with the Colvale police in this regard till late Tuesday night.

Sources said an investigation has been initiated in the matter and a police complaint or necessary action will be taken against the accused after a report is submitted on the investigation.

Incidentally, Aziz Asif, while in prison, had attacked a fellow inmate, Gajendra Singh alias Chhotu, with a sharp weapon in March 2022. At that time, the Colvale police had registered a case against him.

Gajendra Singh had been arrested by Calangute police in connection with vandalism at the Soza Lobo restaurant, while Aziz was arrested by Calangute police in September 2021 on charges of. After that, both Aziz and Chhotu were released on bail.

In August 2024, Calangute police had re-arrested Aziz Asif on charges of robbing tourists. Aziz has been in Colvale Jail since September 2024.

Aziz Asif is a history sheeter who has over 20 cases of theft registered against him in Goa and Karnataka. Aziz was first arrested by Calangute police in 2019 and was later arrested by Saligao and Anjuna police in different cases.
