Ribandar, the capital city’s outlying locale, where several ‘smart city’ related projects are in various stages of execution, did not face any flooding of roads and public spaces during the current monsoon owing to a project designed to resolve the longstanding drainage and flooding issues.

“The completion of extensive cross drains and stormwater management improvements from Ribandar Patto Circle to Vithal Mandir has boosted the area’s resilience against monsoon floods,” said a statement issued by Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited (IPSCDL).

It said the project involved desilting, repairing, and upgrading 19 cross drains spanning a road stretch of 2.7 km, besides building new drains designed to manage drainage efficiently even during heavy rainfall.

Several of the drains were also desilted and cleaned of sediment accumulated over the years.

“This essential maintenance has revitalised a drainage system that was a major cause of flooding in Ribandar in the past,” the IPSCDL statement said.

In other areas where flooding risk is high, such as at the Vithal Mandir Y junction, the drain cross-section was expanded by nearly three times the old volume to address potential flooding risks.

Other areas where drains and cross drains were expanded include the locales near Ajuda Medical Store and Dengoa Football Court, where the capacities to manage stormwater were more than doubled, IPSCDL said.
