As the reckless disposal of the thermocol and other waste along the SGPDA wholesale fish market road and on the banks of river Sal has come under the High Court scanner, there’s finally a ray of hope that the issue may be finally resolved since the Margao Municipal Council and the SGPDA have been involved in a blame game to tackle the menace.

The thermocol waste had raised its ugly head outside the wholesale fish market after the SGPDA and the MMC passed the buck to each other for clearing the waste.

In fact, while the Margao Municipal Council had issued a notice to the SGPDA on July 25 last to show cause why the PDA should not be imposed a penalty of Rs 25,000 for not clearing the thermocol waste littered outside the wholesale fish market, the PDA in turn had replied to the civic body on July 27 stating the MMC is duty bound to clear  the waste generated from the market yards within the Municipal jurisdiction.

In fact, the SGPDA Member secretary Sheikh Ali had maintained in his reply to the MMC show cause notice that the civic body should carry out their own duty of collection of garbage regularly and keep the area clean and in hygienic condition.

"As the MMC is collecting sopo from the vehicles and outside the wholesale fish market, it is the duty of the MMC to clean the entire area and keep it neat and in hygienic condition”, the SGPDA member secretary had stated in his reply.

While the MMC and the SGPDA had been at loggerheads over the question of jurisdiction in cleaning the thermocol and other waste littered outside the area, the entire wholesale fish market waste had turned into an eye sore, with pieces of thermocol waste even finding its way into the adjoining River Sal.

The MMC and the SGPDA were at war over the question of clearing the mound of dry waste dumping on the border of the PDA retail market, with the waste spilling into the adjoining paddy fields.
