In an interesting development, inspection of the electrocution site at Colva beach has revealed that the insulation sleeve of a phase wire of aluminium cable was found damaged and was touching the internal metal body of the lamp pole.

Even as the Colva police is dragging its feet in registering an offence in connection with the death of the Rajasthan tourist due to electrocution, the inspection report of the electricity department is clear in saying the damage to the insulation sleeve of the phase wire might have caused leakage current to pass through earthing wire, where the victim is suspected to have come in contact and got electrocuted.

The inspection was carried out by the Engineer, Colva Section Office Siddesh Velip, the Executive Engineer Shashikant Halgekar, Division-XVI, Margao, the Superintending Engineer Rajiv Samant, Circle-1(South), Margao and the Assistant Engineer Vishad Pole, GTDC & the Executive Engineer Kirankumar Naik, GTDC to ascertain the cause of accident.

Upon inspection, the team observed there were 11 numbers of decorative lamp posts with LED lights installed by the GTDC at the edge of the boundary of the retaining wall for which aluminium armoured cable is laid.

“Upon detailed inspection, it was noted that, on one of the decorative lamp post (5th pole from left hand side facing the beach), the insulation sleeve of phase wire of aluminium cable was found damaged and was touching the internal metal body of pole which might have caused leakage current to pass through earthing wire where the victim is suspected to have come in contact and got electrocuted,” the report stated.

The report from the Electricity Department has for the first time shed light that the insulation sleeve of the phase wire of the aluminium cable was found damaged. The report has also suspected current leakage as the suspected cause behind the tragedy that hit the tourist from Rajasthan.
