MARGAO
Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira on Friday has said the long pending contentious issue of Kabrastan will be resolved soon, with the Church authorities willing to provide road access to the land acquired by the Margao Municipal Council for the burial grounds at Sonsodo.
The Minister said he has decided to take up with the government for sanction of funds to the panchayats and municipal councils for the disposal of dead bodies, saying that around 17 unclaimed dead bodies are lying at the mortuary at the Goa Medical College and Hospital and at the South Goa District Hospital.
The Minister told the media that once the issue over the signing of MoU between the Church authorities and the Margao Municipal Council is resolved, the road access to the acquired land will become a reality. “There is an issue whether the Church authorities should sign an easement agreement or make a gift deed to the MMC for the access road. Once this legal issue is resolved, work on the road access to the burial grounds/ Kabrastan will be resolved,” he added.
