Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Damodar Kaskar resigned on Monday and he is likely to be replaced by Leo Rodrigues.
In a letter to the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA) he said he had resigned on personal grounds, but sources in the BJP said Kaskar has resigned as a part of a mutual understanding.
Sources in BJP said Ward 25 Councillor Leo Rodrigues is likely to be the next MMC Chairperson as his name is at the forefront from the ruling BJP group.
When contacted, Kaskar admitted he had resigned as a part of a mutual understanding but refrained from furnishing more details on speculation about Leo Rodrigues taking over as the next MMC chairperson.
"While I have been the chairperson for around 13 months, the first six months were lost in the pandemic and next two months due to the code of conduct and assembly elections,” said Kaskar.
“However, in whatever time that I got, I managed to get development works of around Rs 5 crores and among the important works taken during my tenure was the digitisation of files because we could not find files on time.”
“We have also implemented the outsourcing of Sopo and taken steps to get the maximum recovery of dues even through OTS schemes if required. We have also taken up renovation works of the MMC building which will be completed within the next six months. We have also taken up work on the long-pending fish market project," said Kaskar.
