A Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited (KTCL) bus en route to Panaji from Ponda overturned at Chimbel near an underpass construction site. The accident, which occurred earlier today, led to the rescue of eight passengers and two crew members, while three passengers sustained minor injuries and were rushed to GMC for treatment.
The driver, who also suffered minor injuries, explained that the accident was caused by brake failure. "While coming down the slope, the brake pedals gave way. To avoid hitting other vehicles, I steered to the left. The soft mud at the side of the road caused the bus to topple," the driver said.
The bus conductor, seated at the back, described the scene, adding, "There was a usual traffic block, and the bus was moving slowly downhill. Suddenly, the bus veered off course and slowly fell into a ditch dug up for construction. Despite the traffic on the road, the driver could avoid hitting oncoming vehicles." He also mentioned that the bus had been regularly maintained at the depot.
Police and Fire and Emergency Services (FES) arrived on the scene.
This is the third incident reported in Goa today. Earlier, a rental cab collided with a truck near Arlem junction, Fatorda, and another vehicle went off the road near the Rawanfond bridge, Margao. The car driver involved in the latter incident escaped with minor injuries.
