PORVORIM
Though it has been over two weeks since the landslide on Porvorim-Betim Road near the Gurudwara, the boulders that came crashing down still lie by the side of the road, posing a risk to traffic.
The landslide occurred on July 15 at around 5:30 pm boulders, mud, and trees came crashing down. Upon receiving information about the landslide, fire brigade officials immediately took action, cutting the trees, while the police put up barricades and cleared part of the road for traffic. However, the disaster management team has not yet removed the boulders lying by the side of the road.
When contacted, the Sarpanch of Penha de Franca, Swapnil Chodankar, mentioned that this is the second time such a landslide has occurred at the same place on Porvorim-Betim Road in recent years.
“There is heavy traffic on Porvorim-Betim Road, and many residents walk from Porvorim to Betim on this road. They have requested the disaster management team to remove the boulders many times, but in vain. There is also a need to install steel mesh alongside the hill at certain places to prevent further landslides. The panchayat cannot afford to undertake this work,” said Chodankar.
