MARGAO
While the Margao Civic body may tide over the situation arising out of the Sonsodo waste management shed turning saturated in the last two days, the issue of leachate control has come to stare at the civic body once again.
When the acting Chairperson Deepali Sawal and with officials in tow descended at Sonsodo on Thursday morning, they came across leachate flowing out of the Sonsodo waste management shed for want of internal drains channelizing the leachate generated inside the shed.
With the walls of the waste management shed crumbling and the internal drains clogged with waste, the leachate has found its way into the approach road to Sonsodo, posing risk to the garbage truck drivers.
MMC officials, however, said a proposal prepared by the office to repair the shed walls and to unclog the internal drains and other minor works, estimated around Rs 24 lakhs is pending with the Council.
Sources informed that unless the civic body undertakes the repair work of the shed walls and the internal drains cleared of the waste, the problem of overflowing leachate will continue to come back to haunt the civic body. "There is no other solution to the overflowing leachate from the Sonsodo waste shed unless the repair work is executed at the shed at the earliest”, remarked an official.
The official, however, hastened to add that it is purely for the Council to take a call, saying the file pertaining to the work is stuck at the top level, awaiting clearance to facilitate the office to tender the work.
