CANACONA – Tourism officials recently dismantled seven temporary kiosks on Rajbhag beach, traditionally operated by locals selling fruits and juices, sparking outrage among residents who allege bias. Locals claim that while authorities target small traders, they ignore major violations by a nearby luxury hotel. According to officials, these kiosks were removed following warnings issued three weeks prior, as they lacked the required permits.
The Tourism Department stated that their actions align with government directives to eliminate illegal structures on beaches. Despite this, locals argue they weren’t formally notified and that the officials selectively enforce rules, allowing the hotel to continue its nighttime beach operations and multi-day events, which often leave behind waste.
Led by CMC Vice-Chairperson Gandesh Madgavkar, residents protested the demolition, noting the significant personal investments made in these seasonal kiosks. They contend that their small trade, open for just a few months annually, doesn’t generate high profits but provides essential income. Madgavkar emphasised that locals have invested heavily, yet face restrictions while the hotel operates freely.
Some residents recall a prior intervention by MLA Ramesh Tawadkar, which allowed them to complete the season undisturbed. With Tawadkar reportedly abroad, they vow to appeal his support once again and seek stricter regulation of the hotel’s activities. In response, a tourism official reiterated that legal permits are required for any beach trade.
