Loss of business for poultry farmers from the Kolhapur region due to the disruption of supply chains of their produce in Goa prompted Chandgad legislator Shivaji Patil to pay a visit to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to seek his intervention and resolve the issues on Tuesday.
Sources said Sawant assured Patil that he would convene a meeting with the local poultry trader bodies and the association representatives of Kolhapur poultry farmers to resolve the matters.
Over the last few days, vehicles transporting livestock from Kolhapur had been prevented from entering Goa.
According to Jaikrishna Naik, who heads the poultry farmers and traders’ body in Goa, the vehicles were stopped due to complaints about quality, because of which they approached the authorities for inspection.
“It is necessary to verify the health of the birds being transported to the State,” Naik said.
Traders from Kolhapur proceeded on strike because vehicles were reportedly being rigorously checked for the health of the birds, which disrupted the supply chain and caused a temporary shortage, marginally affecting prices.
