What was feared all along at the Old Margao railway station area, the hub of anti-social activities, pickpocketing and prostitution, has finally come true on Monday.

An unknown person was stabbed to death at the old railway station site with a broken glass bottle. The incident occurred at around 8.45 am on Monday when a male accused person, aged 25-30 years, fair complexion, wearing a Bluish t-shirt with a white strip on the front side, black pants and an orange belt-like material on the left side of the pants, assaulted an unknown person, aged 25-30 years, wearing a blue colour t-shirt and blue colour track pants, with a glass bottle on the head.

Police said that the accused further stabbed the victim in the chest region, with the same bottle, thereby causing his death.

Margao police station in-charge, PI Tulsidas Naik along with DySP Santosh Desai rushed to the spot to conduct investigations. The body was taken to the South Goa District Hospital for a post-mortem examination, which is scheduled for Tuesday.

PI Tulsidas informed that the police have identified a suspect. “From our preliminary investigations, it has come to light that the deceased was a ragpicker. The duo must have picked up a quarrel before it ended in the murder,” he said.

Margao’s old station premises area has been a hotbed of anti-social activities over the years since the station was shifted into the new Konkan Railway station building. Pick-pocketing, prostitution, etc, have been the order of the day at the area in the absence of policing.

In fact, a former district police chief had once deployed armed policemen in the area to check the increasing anti-social activities, with the area frequented by anti-socials and migrants.
