Vasco firefighters saved a man trapped neck-deep in muck in a marshy area near the Cortalim ferry point on Saturday afternoon.
The incident came to light when locals noticed the man struggling to free himself from the swamp. Despite their efforts, they were unable to rescue him due to the depth and consistency of the muck. A ferry worker then alerted the Vasco fire station.
Speaking to reporters, a fire official stated that they received the distress call at around 2.45 pm. Upon arriving at the scene, they found the man, later identified as Wilson Nilu, a native of Andhra Pradesh aged approximately 45-50 years, trapped in the swamp.
“The man likely ventured into the waters for fishing during low tide, unaware of the risk, and became stuck in the marshy area. Locals tried to help him but were unsuccessful. When we arrived, we initially attempted to use a harness, but it was a challenging situation,” said a fire official.
The fire team used a combination of ropes, a harness, and a ladder to collectively pull the man out of the muck.
“The operation required careful coordination, but we managed to rescue him safely,” the official added.
