With people staying indoors and transport and business down because of Covid-19 pandemic, the Goan Mancurad mango seemed to have become a casualty this season.
Baskets full of mancurad and other variety of mangoes were available in plenty around the new market area of the commercial capital as usual, but there have been less takers and less demand for the seasonal fruit.
In fact, the last two days have seen a reduced demand for mangoes in the new market area of the city, partly attributed to the ongoing lockdown and with people staying away from the markets due to the massive spike in Covid cases in the last few days.
Information suggests that while around half-a-dozen vehicles brought in tonnes of mangoes from the Goan farms, right from Sankhalim and other parts of the State, they have transported the fruit back for want of demand. “We have hardly made any business in the last few days. The last two days have affected us badly with people preferring to stay indoors,” informed a trader.
He pointed out that mangoes being a perishable commodity and with prevailing hot and humid conditions in the State, traders keep their fingers crossed over the crop this year. “Let us wait and see how the situation unfolds in the next few days,” another trader added.
