MMC promises to halt disposal on plateau
MAPUSA
The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has directed the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) to submit an action plan within 24 hours regarding the management of waste dumped on the Assagao plateau.
A joint hearing was held before the GSPCB Chairman, Mahesh Patil, based on the complaint of the Assagao Comunidade.
MMC Chairperson Priya Mishal, MMC Chief Officer Chandrakant Shetkar, and Assagao Comunidade Attorney Nelson Fernandes were present on the occasion.
The MMC has been accused of dumping garbage on land owned by the Assagao Comunidade. The Comunidade claimed this is an illegal act that has also been causing pollution in the village.
During the hearing, it was decided that the MMC, along with the Solid Waste Management Corporation, would prepare an action plan to resolve the problem.
Patil directed the MMC to shift biodegradable waste to the Saligao waste management plant and to implement the Cunchelim waste management project.
Patil said the MMC had been instructed not to continue dumping waste on the Assagao plateau.
Accordingly, the MMC has promised to stop dumping waste and has sought some time to implement this. Patil directed the MMC to submit a waste management action plan by Tuesday evening.
Assagao Comunidade lawyer Nelson Fernandes said they had filed a complaint against the MMC for dumping garbage on Comunidade property. “Accordingly, a hearing was held on Monday. The MMC has been given a week’s time to shift its waste management operations to the Saligao and Cunchelim projects. The municipality has also promised to stop garbage dumping on the Assagao plateau,” said Fernandes.
