In a significant step toward improving waste management and reducing open garbage dumps, Mapusa municipality has added a new hydraulic compactor to its fleet, offering relief to a civic body that has long struggled with a shortage of waste collection vehicles.

The newly acquired vehicle, valued at Rs 40 lakh, is expected to enhance the city’s capacity to manage waste collection efficiently across several wards.

The hydraulic compactor, a large vehicle capable of collecting waste from eight to ten wards in a single trip, promises to bring much-needed relief to the ongoing waste disposal issues in Mapusa.

With the new addition, municipal officials believe they are better equipped to manage the city’s growing waste problem and reduce the number of unsightly garbage dumps in open spaces.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Mapusa MLA and Deputy Speaker Joshua D’Souza expressed optimism about the positive impact the new compactor would have on the city’s cleanliness.

“We’ve been facing difficulties in collecting waste from open areas due to a lack of adequate vehicles. This new hydraulic compactor is a blessing for us. It will enable us to reach every ward regularly and ensure that waste is picked up on time. This will greatly contribute to keeping our city clean and improving the quality of life for our residents,” D’Souza said.

The inauguration event, held in the presence of Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Nutan Bicholkar, MMC Chief Officer Chandrakant Shetkar and other councillors and officials, marks a key development in Mapusa’s ongoing efforts to improve its waste management infrastructure.

D’Souza further emphasized the importance of public cooperation in keeping the city clean, urging residents to participate in door-to-door garbage collection programmes and refrain from dumping waste in open spaces.

“If we all follow a proper waste disposal system, the burden on our civic officials will be reduced, and our city will stay cleaner. It’s essential that people stop the practice of open dumping and work with the system to ensure better waste management for everyone,” he added.

The newly acquired compactor is expected to cover the entire Mapusa area with just two to three trips, further enhancing efficiency. Officials anticipate a significant reduction in open waste dumps, which have been a persistent issue due to inadequate resources for collection.

D’Souza took the opportunity to thank Urban Development Minister Vishwajit Rane for facilitating the provision of the hydraulic compactor.

He said the vehicle’s introduction is a crucial step in the municipality’s ongoing efforts to enhance its waste management capabilities.

Chairperson Nutan Bicholkar also expressed hope that the addition of the compactor would make a tangible difference in the cleanliness of Mapusa, stressing the need for continuous efforts in waste management improvements.

With Mapusa’s growing population and urban development, waste management has been a pressing concern for city officials.

The addition of the hydraulic compactor is seen as a positive step toward tackling this issue head-on, and officials are hopeful that the community will rally around the cause of maintaining a cleaner and healthier environment for all.
