Re-development of the circulating area of the Margao railway station with central funds under the Union Ministry of Tourism has kicked off, with the Konkan railway officials saying the railways will utilize the balance funds for building a multi-level parking lot in the station premises.
KRC senior official, Baban Ghatge informed that the Konkan railway had received funds to the tune of Rs 25 crore for development of the circulating area of the railway stations at Margao, Thivim and Karmali under the Union Tourism Ministry’s plan.
“Margao railway station was allocated funds to the tune of Rs 13 crore. We have utilized the funds to change the face of the Margao railway station premises. We have planned a bus bay and a stand for the local buses”, Ghatge said.
He pointed out that since the railways have utilized around 50 per cent of the allocated funds, the railways will apply for release of the balance funds, which will be utilized to build the multi-level parking project. “We expect to complete the projects under the Union Tourism Ministry’s funds within a year’s time”, he added.
Meanwhile, Margao MLA Digambar Kamat along with officials had a meeting with the KRC officials as the state government has planned beautification of the entire road from Rawanfond bridge to the Khareband bridge passing in front of the Margao railway station.
Kamat said the meeting was held to ensure that the plans drawn up by the local government and the Konkan railway are amalgamated, especially at the entrance to the railway station for smooth movement of traffic.
He said the government has floated a tender to appoint a consultant to execute the beautification work on the Rawanfond-Khareband bridge stretch, adding that the consultant is expected to give a power point presentation on the beautification plan by next week.
