Margao’s heritage to get fresh lease of life with CM’s budgetary push

The crumbling heritage buildings dotting the commercial capital will get a fresh lease of life, thanks to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s budgetary provision to give a facelift to the city’s heritage.

Not only the 110-year-old Margao Municipal building, but also the old heritage Hospicio structure along with other structures will be restored to its past glory.

In fact, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Saturday said his government is committed to restore the city’s heritage in a planned manner. “After Panaji, Margao plays host to heritage structures. I have made budgetary provision to refurbish the Margao Municipal building. The Old Hospicio building will also be restored. The old Collectorate building will also get a facelift, the government is committed to restore the heritage structures,” he said.

Saying he has made provision of Rs 100 crore for development in all constituencies in a planned manner, the Chief Minister sought support and cooperation of the people to make Goa green and clean. “My government has laid focus on waste management. I have already said that we do not want visitors who will come and dirty the State,” he said.

He added: “My government wants to make Goa as the tourism capital of India. We are working hard to make Goa a destination for medical tourism, spiritual tourism, sports tourism. Goa will be a role model for other states to emulate.”

Saying that Margao MLA Digambar Kamat has taken various initiatives to beef up the infrastructure works in the city, the Chief Minister said the government has taken up beatification of the area around the Margao railway station.
