Master Plan proposes to convert Comunidades building into museum, raises questions

MARGAO
The Master Plan 2041 for Margao has proposed opening up of the Margao Municipal garden and the Aga Khan Park to the adjoining street as part of the plan to create a pedestrian friendly city centre.

But, the proposal to convert the Administrative building of the Comunidades into a museum of South Goa has indeed raised questions and comes as a surprise whether the imposing comunidade building will no longer play host to comunidade affairs in the future.

That’s not all. Questions are being raised how exactly will the government go about converting the Administrator of Comunidade building as a museum when the components of South Goa Comunidades have drawn up plans to refurbish the building, which has been craving for attention over the years.

Questions are being raised over the plan to convert the decades old building into a museum when outgoing PWD Minister Nilesh Cabral had directed the PWD to prepare a plan for the renovation and repairs of the building at an estimated cost of over Rs 2 crore. It’s another matter that the components of Comunidades have raised serious reservations over the PWD plan to execute the job of repairs to the Comunidade building since the components had expressed its willingness on more than one occasion to execute the repair work through its own funds.

Components of Comunidades seemed to have no knowledge what is the Master Plan all about vis-à-vis the imposing Administrator of Comunidade building, with a component of a Salcete-based Comunidade asserting that the components have not been taken on board before it was proposed to convert the Administrative building into a museum of South Goa. “We have no idea about the Master Plan for Margao. Let the government or GSUDA explain how they intend to go about converting the Administrative building into a museum,” the component added.
