A day after Chief Minister Pramod Sawant criticised residents of Mayem for opposing quality projects like the proposed international law college in the village, the Mayem Bhoo-Vimochan Nagrik Kruti Samitee responded by stating that the government should focus on solving their pending issues before imposing projects in the village.
Addressing a press conference at Bicholim on Thursday, the Samitee President Sakharam Pednekar insisted that pending issue of allotting land ownership titles to locals of Mayem should be resolved urgently.
“Residents of Mayem will simply not oppose any project. We are aware that the BJP government has supported pollution-free projects on government land in other parts of Goa. The site chosen for the proposed law college is not suitable due to the existence of a temple. The local MLA was expected to provide proper information in the matter,” said Pednekar.
Samitee member Rajesh Kalangutkar said the struggle for land ownership rights had been going on for 60 years.
“These issues are not fully resolved. We want the government to expedite the process of allotting sanads to people with the same pace and urgency as had been done in the case of the proposed law college,” said Kalangutkar.
Another Samitee member Yeshwant Karbhotkar said the government should focus on solving the land issue in Mayem and should take locals into confidence while selecting the place for any project.
“If the matter had been handled in a proper manner, there would have been no question of raising any opposition,” said Karbhotkar.
Sakharam Pednekar also accused some political leaders of playing politics at their cost and warned them not to mislead people in the village.
