A medical officer is reported to have been threatened by an inmate Agustin Carvalho at Colvale jail, raising the issue of safety of medical officers in the jail.

Dr Yogesh Govekar has lodged a complaint in this regard with the jail administration and has requested the Inspector General of Prisons to initiate necessary measures in the jail for his safety.

According to reports, Dr Govekar was attending to a patient, when the prisoner, Agustin Carvalho, is alleged to have forcibly entered the clinic and threatened the doctor with dire consequences.

Sources said, an assistant jailer who served as a bodyguard to the doctor was present but allegedly did not interfere in the matter.

Sources added that jail protocols demand that inmates in need of medical attention/treatment are accompanied by a jail staff, but Augustine managed to walk unaccompanied and straight into the clinic of the medical officer.

This has raised serious issues regarding lapses in security arrangements in the Colvale Jail.
