Goa’s medical emergency services on highways got a major boost with the induction of 21 new advanced life support (ALS) ambulances, including four fitted with equipment specifically geared for highway emergencies.

The ambulances, procured through the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of the District Mineral Foundation and Molbio Diagnostics Pvt Ltd, were inducted into the fleet by Health Minister Vishwajit Rane at a ceremony held at the Directorate of Health Services on Friday.

At the event, Rane said several other initiatives in the public health sector are planned through the CSR funding route, including some infrastructure at the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

Already, a major portion of the In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) centre at the GMC, which completed one year since it was set up had most of its equipment procured through CSR funding.

Rane also said that the GMC is in the process of formalising a system for private caretakers accompanying patients at the hospital, including preparing a database of registered private caretakers.

Only caretakers registered with the GMC will be permitted to accompany the patient in the hospital and fees to be paid to caretakers will also be standardized by GMC, he added.
