As the investigation into the high-profile accident case enters its second week, the Mardol police have encountered a hurdle in their efforts to reconstruct the accident scene -- the reason being the absence of the crucial “prime witness” Meghana.
The wife of the accused drunk driver, Shripad Sinai Sawardekar alias Paresh, Meghana has cited medical reasons to dodge police investigation.
Sources said that Meghana’s initial statement was recorded at her residence but she has subsequently failed to comply with two notices issued by the Mardol police. In response to these notices, her legal representative has informed the police that she currently requires medical attention and is unfit to join the probe until her health improves.
“Recreating the accident scene hinges on her presence as she is the prime witness in the case,” explained an officer.
It is also learnt that she has filed an application before the High Court of Bombay at Goa despite being granted anticipatory bail this week.
Kids called on
While public attention remains fixed on this case, the police have been expediting their efforts, including recording statements from the Sawardekar couple’s triplets, who were seated in the back seat of the car. Multiple witnesses including eye-witnesses have also deposed before the police.
Forensic reports awaited
A substantial amount of crucial evidence has been gathered including mechanical inspection of the SUV by transport officials and evidence collection by forensic experts. The pending reports from these examinations are awaited, an officer said.
CCTV footage
Although the accident site lacked CCTV surveillance, the police claim that they possess ample footage showing the movement of the Mercedes, as well as the other vehicles affected by the collision. The department also intends to use specialised software to enhance specific segments of the footage, which could prove crucial for the investigation.
SP speaks
The Goan contacted South SP Abhishek Dhania, who asserted that the police investigation is in the right direction. “Our investigation is ongoing, and in the right direction. We have issued notices to Meghana to join our inquiry and she has to cooperate," he said while refusing to divulge further details of the probe.
