The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research on Saturday organized a beach cleanup at the world famous Colva beach by involving the local populace and the school  students.

Participating in the cleanup drive, Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas said the time has come to make the planet plastic free.

He said the United Nations has set 2023 as the deadline to ban single use of plastic and to completely avoid use of plastic by 2040.

“Our planet is full of plastic and it is high time that we all have to take measure to stop the menace”, he said.

The MLA said that all the stakeholders as well as citizens join hands to launch initiatives to make the planet plastic free.

Meanwhile, the Goan Seamen Association of India (GSAI) on Saturday organised a coastal clean up drive in the tourist village of Varca as part of Coastal Clean up day.
GSAI president Frank Viegas along with members went about collecting plastic and other waste littered along the Varca coast.
Saying that Goa is blessed by sea, sand, sun and the seafarers, the GSAI president underscored the need to protect the environment, especially the coastal belt from pollution and contamination by the plastic menace.
