Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar has pushed for the early completion of a railway overbridge near Tanya Hotel and a culvert in the area.

During a site inspection along with South Goa Collector Egna Cleetus, Salkar directed railway officials and Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Girish Borker to prioritise these projects in the interest of Vasco residents.

Speaking to the media after the inspection, Salkar highlighted the urgent need for these developments. He stated that a new overbridge near Tanya Ground is essential for ensuring smooth traffic movement and emergency response.

“We wanted to update the South Goa Collector about the difficulties faced by locals. While Vasco does not experience major flooding during monsoons, an additional culvert is necessary to prevent future waterlogging. Areas like Mestawada, Belabai, and Orulem are prone to natural disasters, making it crucial to have a 4-metre-high bridge for ambulance and fire tender access,” Salkar said.

The inspection, attended by railway officials, the Deputy Collector, and the Mamlatdar, resulted in a decision to hold a final meeting next week, with work on the new bridge set to begin in the first week of April. Salkar emphasised that this step is crucial to avoiding potential monsoon-related tragedies.

The MLA also called Water Resources Department (WRD) officials to assess low-lying areas vulnerable to water stagnation. He suggested installing a pumping station to mitigate flooding risks.

“We had earlier proposed widening the culvert, but the project was delayed. Now, with the Collector’s intervention, we aim to expedite the process and include the new culvert as part of pre-monsoon preparations,” Salkar added.

With the Collector’s visit and directives in place, Vasco residents can expect faster implementation of these critical infrastructure projects.
