Even as the Centre has sanctioned funds for land acquisition for the proposed Cuncolim bypass, residents of Cuncolim as well as the MLA seemed in the dark over the alignment and the number of houses that would be affected by the construction of the bypass.

After residents of Cuncolim called on him, seeking to know the proposed Cuncolim bypass alignment, Cuncolim MLA & Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao along with his Quepem counterpart Altone D’Costa had a meeting with PWD, NH Dattaprasad Kamat and other engineers on Saturday to address the concerns of the people.

The PWD engineers came up with the alignment plan and design, but could not satisfactorily give figures on the number of houses that would be razed to make way for the bypass.

Yuri informed that since the proposed bypass starting at Uskiniarik is proposed to be built via the Comba area before the bypass meets the NH 66 near the Balli Primary Health Centre, it has been decided to inspect the alignment and find out the ground reality.

He said Quepem MLA Altone D’Costa was invited for the interaction as the bypass will be entering Balli from Cuncolim, adding that inputs from the MLA will be placed before the Highway officials for necessary action.

“I had arranged the interaction with PWD officials and residents of Cuncolim to understand the exact status of the option No. 3 route for the NH-66 bypass. Quepem MLA Altone D'Costa gave his valuable input. A physical site inspection will be done to know the exact route and number of houses getting affected,” Yuri said.

Saying the people of Cuncolim have been anxiously waiting for the bypass given the traffic congestion in the town, Yuri said the proposed inspection would reveal the number of houses that would face the axe and how to go about protecting their interests if option No. 3 is finally adopted for implementation.
