Long before the Manohar International Airport, also known as Mopa Airport, was built, the site was already surrounded by tales of ghosts and paranormal activities. The area’s rich history has led to many legends, but whether these stories are true or just myths is unclear.
According to local stories, the land where Mopa Airport now stands was once home to hidden caves and sacred shrines dedicated to various goddesses. Some residents say that cremations took place on the property, adding a spiritual significance to the area. These stories suggest a deep connection to the land that goes back long before the airport was built.
One popular tale is of a “lady in white” who is said to haunt the runway. People have reported seeing her late at night, creating an eerie presence. Another story describes a mysterious, large flame that appears during the night, adding to the unsettling atmosphere.
Residents also talk about hearing a woman’s cries in the middle of the night. When these cries are heard, animals like cattle and dogs reportedly become agitated and howl. Another story involves a large figure known as “Raknau” who is said to be seen around the airport area.
Some even say that the roads leading to the airport feel spooky, especially late at night.
Since the airport opened, new stories have emerged. One cleaning staff member, a local resident, said they avoid working from 10 PM to 3 AM because they believe paranormal activities are most likely to happen then. This has caused unease among those working late at the airport.
Some rumours suggest that between 10:30 PM and 1 AM, visibility on the runway becomes poor and communication between aircraft and air traffic control can be disrupted. These issues are often linked to supposed paranormal activities, though there is no official confirmation of these claims.
In the past, there were concerns about hidden caves beneath the runway. An investigation by the archaeological department found no evidence to support these claims.
Adding to the intrigue, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai recently raised questions about the airport’s operations. He pointed out that the airport closes by 10:30 PM and noted that no Goan staff are present after this time. Sardesai wondered whether this early closure and staff absence were due to routine procedures or something more unusual. He compared this with the Dabolim Airport, which operated late into the night, and questioned why Mopa Airport’s operations are different.
According to recent flight details, on Saturday the last departure was at 10:45 PM and the last arrival was at 1:55 AM on 4th August.
Stories of paranormal activity are not just at Mopa Airport but also at several other locations across the state.
