Want to know why locals, p’yat kept in dark about building

Locals in Morjim are up in arms against a proposed casino project in the village and are expected to raise the issue at the Gram Sabha on Sunday.
Unhappy about the proposed construction of a multi-storeyed building for the proposed casino, a memorandum along with a signature campaign has been submitted to the Morjim panchayat. Locals have also submitted a representation on this issue to the Panchayat.
Residents are also raising awareness against the proposed casino in the village.
A few days ago, Mandrem MLA Jit Arolkar had attended a Satyanarayana Mahapuja at the Sri Kaloba Devasthan. Locals had interacted with Arolkar and voiced their opposition to the proposed casino.
They claimed that no one in the village had demanded a casino in the area and sought to know why projects were being set up without taking the local panchayat and residents into confidence.
Arolkar assured the people that if they were opposed to the project, he would stand by their wishes. He informed that he has also sent a letter to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and requested him to withdraw permissions to the project.
When contacted, Morjim Sarpanch Pawan Morje said if there is opposition to permission given for the construction of this building, a resolution could be passed in the Gram Sabha and it would be forwarded to authorities.
“We will, however, consult experts before taking any further action regarding licences granted by authorities,” said Morje.
