MP calls for protecting Goa’s land from external control

MARGAO
South Goa MP Captain Viriato Fernandes on Sunday said the whole fight that is underway in the State is to save the land and the little paradise what is known as Goa for the future generations.

Sounding a warning that big players are coming to Goa to take over the land, the MP further said, “We have come to a point in Goa wherein we have become slaves, wherein someone is ruling over us and we are not in a position to decide for our children”.

He was speaking at the inauguration of a 16-bedded home for the destitute at the Pedru Arupe Institute at Raia set up by Dream India Network in collaboration with Goa Jesuits Province and Reach Lives, Anora Charitable Trust.

“Our whole fight in Goa is to protect the land for the future generations. If the land is not there, we will not be able to expand our dreams and hand over the legacy to our children,” he said.

Complimenting Anora Charitable Trust, Dream India Network and the Provincial of Jesuits Fr Pedru for setting up the home for the destitute, Captain Viriato said it is an irony that the people who are in power should have done this for the downtrodden section of the society. “I have a dream for my people. When I die I don’t want to have a bank balance. I say is survive on my pension. The day I start getting greedy, I will destroy my soul leave alone Goa,” he added.

Founder of Dream India Fr Edward Thomas said the shelter for the homeless is set up in collaboration with Anora Foundation and the Jesuits. “Our dream is to ensure that no human being lies on the roads for want of shelter. They should be given the best facility. Right now the shelter at Raia will only house males. Many such homes will come in the years to come,” he added.

Chairperson, Anora Charitable Foundation,  Mini Mohan outlined the objectives of the destitute home in Goa, saying the home will provide free healthcare interventions for the sickly, elderly and unaccompanied people on the street, free rehabilitation homes for the elderly and free child care home for people of Goa. “Our objective is to provide health and wellness care to destitute and unaccompanied elderly people in destitute/elderly homes and Grace Homes, children in foster homes/child care institutions through the ambulance mobile clinic,” Mohan added.
