Panaji: Chairman of Mormugao Port Authority (MPA), N. Vinod Kumar, has said that the port went through challenging times due to the ban on mining activities. This ban had a major impact on the port’s operations, as a large part of its cargo consisted of mined materials.

Despite these setbacks, the MPA saw a 19% increase in cargo handling last year, showing signs of recovery. The port is now focusing on future growth and expansion. N. Vinod Kumar announced that projects worth Rs 1,152 crore are currently underway to enhance the port’s infrastructure and operations.

One of the major developments includes the completion of a four-lane highway that will soon connect the port, improving accessibility and easing the transportation of goods. Additionally, by 2025, the MPA is expected to start handling containers, marking a significant expansion in its capabilities.
