Highlighting the profound impact of Monsignor Herculano Gonsalves’ life on the Church and the community, Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão described him as an inspiring example of holiness.

Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão was speaking at the 75th death anniversary of Msgr. Herculano D. Gonsalves, founder of the Congregation of the Sisters of Handmaids of Christ in Goa, at the St Alex Church in Calangute.

“Msgr Herculano lived as a holy priest, and his life remains a powerful inspiration for all of us to follow him on the path of holiness,” said Cardinal Ferrão.

He further emphasised the teachings of Msgr Herculano, who famously encouraged others to “look up to heaven, die to self, and live for others.” The cardinal underscored that it was by adhering to these principles that Msgr Herculano not only achieved sanctity but also spread the message of holiness throughout the community.

Cardinal Ferrão expressed his hopes that the life of Msgr Herculano would continue to inspire all to follow Jesus faithfully, serve others joyfully, and grow in holiness.

Earlier, Cardinal Ferrão presided over the Holy Eucharist, while Fr Polly Lobo, Parish Priest of St Alex Church, concelebrated the service on the theme, ‘Inspired by Monsignhor Herculano, let us become the proclaimers of Hope.’

Sr Faria Barretto H.C. expressed her heartfelt gratitude to everyone present, a documentary on the life of Founder was screened.

Born in Cana-Benaulim, Monsignor Herculano devoted his life to uplifting the marginalised, especially children and women in need.

After being ordained as a priaaest in 1892, he emerged as a symbol of hope in the early 1930s. He founded key institutions like the St Alex Orphanage and the Little Flower of Jesus High School, demonstrating his deep commitment to the welfare of the poor. In 1934, he established the Congregation of the Sisters of Handmaids of Christ, further solidifying his legacy of service.

During the event, Cardinal Ferrao released two publications: ‘A Path to Holiness’, a book about Monsignhor Herculano written by Sr. Faria Barretto H.C., Superior General of the Congregation, and ‘Letters of Our Founder – Longings of his Heart’, a compilation by Sr Adrianne H.C. He also unveiled a photo frame of Msgr Herculano.

The book ‘A Path to Life’ consists of 21 chapters that encapsulate the life and mission of Msgr Herculano Gonsalves. The book ‘Letters of Our Founder: Longings of His Heart’ features letters written by the Monsignor during his time as Vicar General of the Ghats in Belgaum.
