Mumbai's loss is Goa's gain

Joe Rose, after serving the Mumbai tiatr fraternity for nearly four decades, is back to his roots and lives in his ancestral home at Olaulim in Pomburpa. The Goan met with the artiste for a tête-à-tête

Beginning his Konkani stage career at the tender age ofseven years in Mumbai, he has since never looked back, but gone on to achievemany milestones. It appears that Joe Rose’s coming back to his roots andsettling down was an act of God. He was offered the title role of Padre JoseVaz in Prince Jacob’s religious play with the same name. He went on to continuewith the Prince Jacob troupe for nearly a decade thereafter. During breaks hewould shuttle between Mumbai and Goa, but not anymore, as he is firmly anchoredin Goa.

While on a brief break from tiatrs, Joe Rose keeps busy withother projects on hand, one of which is the translation of the popular ‘JoyceMeyer’ Evangelisation Series from English to Konkani. At the same time Joe isworking at producing a Konkani serial for local channel RDX. A few episodes arealready filmed including the title song rendered by Mukhesh Ghatwal.

An accomplished actor, Joe Rose has carved a niche in thehearts of tiatr lovers. He is also adored for his impressive solos both decentas well as comedy. Among his many decent solos, the touching solo ‘KaxintloPaim’ will always remain a classic. Recalling the inspiration behind the lyricsJoe says “It is a true story that happened many decades ago. My grandmother hadnarrated this chilling incident to my mother and she in turn narrated thisstory to me. I went on to compose a song about it and first sang it at thetiatr ‘Ghuttachi Battli’ produced by the Mendes brothers. It was an instant hitand I still remember people would see the tiatr over and over again, only tolisten to this particular solo.”

Among his several memorable solos are, ‘Mobile ani Bible’which won him the TAG best song award in 2010, ‘ATM – Any Time Magnnem’ only goto prove his talent as a class composer. He also has a penchant for composingcomical songs, comparing the old with the modern. ‘Sogllench zalam daktullem’‘Purvozanchim Nanvam’ and ‘Bonkanv’ are some of these hits that instantly cometo mind. “Chris Perry was so impressed with my comedy solo ‘Bonkanv’ that highlightedmusic and music instruments of the bygone era and the modern times, that hewould unfailingly come to the Gomant Vidya Niektan, Margao, just in time tolisten to this song every time it was sung at the tiatr,” recalls Joe Rose withnostalgia.

Having tasted sweet success with his telefilm ‘Mariola’ JoeRose is now all fired up to continue with the saga of Mariola with scriptingthe sequel to the film and is on the lookout for a suitable heroine who can fitthe bill and carry forth the legacy of ‘Mariola’, the girl child.
